As soon as you install a home security system, you’ll need to choose a personal identification number (PIN) as a protective code. Since this number has the ability to disarm your system, it needs to be unique and easy enough for you to remember, but tough enough to challenge potential intruders. Refer to the following helpful advice to create your key.

4 Tips for Setting a Home Security System PIN

1. Reset the Default

When professionals install your home security system, it will likely come with a default PIN. Do not continue to use this number. Trespassers may easily access it simply by knowing what type of system you have. Your PIN should be distinctive.

2. Don’t Make It Too Easy

security systemsSome of the most popular PINs are 1234, 0000, 7777, and 1212, which means these are the first numbers intruders will guess when they try to enter your home. Dates, such as birthdays and anniversaries, are also easy for trespassers to learn. Come up with something a bit more obscure, such as combining the last two digits of your high school graduation year with the first two numbers of your childhood address.

3. Avoid Patterns

Keypad patterns, too, don’t usually present enough of a challenge to those who might invade your home. L-shaped PINs, such as 1236 or 4789, are generally not very secure, nor are the four corners (1379) or down-the-middle (2580).

4. Don’t Reuse Other Codes

There are likely many other PINs in your life, from personal banking to social security numbers to passwords for online accounts. Create distinct codes for each application to minimize your risk. If you don’t, a criminal that finds this information could not only steal your online identity or empty your accounts, but enter your home as well.
