When a veteran passes away, you will plan a funeral that will honor their memory while commemorating their service and sacrifice. Funeral planning for a veteran requires a bit more legwork to ensure all the proper ceremonies are in place. Use the basic guide below to begin planning a service with funding assistance from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Guide to Veteran Funeral Planning

Military-Specific Services

Veterans can choose to be buried in a National Cemetery or any cemetery of their choosing. They are also free to choose cremation services or any other legal burial method.

Additionally, veterans can choose military-specific arrangements for the funeral. For example, they may request the firing of three volleys or a trumpet salute of Taps. They can also receive a burial flag to use during the service, which will then be gifted to the next-of-kin. Tell your funeral director that you will want these services, and they can help you coordinate with the VA to get them scheduled into your service.

VA Contributions

funeral planningIf families choose to bury their loved one in a national cemetery with available space, VA benefits will completely cover a grave site, opening and closing of the grave, perpetual care, a government marker, a burial flag, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate. They may still receive these benefits if buried in a private cemetery, but you’ll need to speak with your funeral director and the VA to determine what your benefits are, as every situation is unique. Keep in mind that the VA will not reach out to you to offer coverage, so you will need to contact them and fill out some paperwork. Your funeral director can help you begin this process.
