Crown molding adds an elegant touch to any room. When installing this building design feature, it's not uncommon to have questions about what size is most appropriate for the height of your walls. Below are a few tips to keep in mind that will help determine the answer to this question.

Walls Up to 8-Feet Tall

building designLarger rooms with higher walls can better accommodate wide pieces of crown molding; but for smaller rooms, thinner molding is the way to go. If your building design has walls 8-feet tall or under, choose a molding between 3 and 5 3/4 inches. Also, you may want to install a type that extends a few inches onto the ceiling itself, as this will create the illusion of additional height and depth.

Walls 9- to 10- Feet Tall

While walls with a height of 9 or 10 feet can benefit from larger molding more seamlessly, you still want to be sure it doesn't overpower the wall. Keep the molding between 4 1/4- and 7-inches wide. For the most visual appeal, choose a variety with a spring angle.

Walls 10-Feet Tall or Higher

With walls of this size, the concern is that the towering building design will swallow or dwarf the crown molding you're looking to install. To ensure this doesn’t happen, select molding at least 7-inches wide. Add even more dimension by applying extra pieces of trim to the top and bottom of the molding.
