The material you choose for your flag is an important decision. Different materials determine your flag’s look, texture, and durability, which is why it’s helpful to understand your options before making a purchase.

3 Great Materials for Your Flag

Nylon

Nylon is one of the best materials for flags meant to fly outdoors. A synthetic polymer, it is reasonably tough, lightweight to flutter nicely in light breezes, and sheds water easily. Nylon will protect your design’s integrity from the elements so you can display it proudly. It can also be dyed with vivid colors, making it an excellent choice if you want eye-catching, colorful custom flags.

Heavy-Duty Polyester

FlagsHD Polyester is a synthetic resin that is the most durable option. Popular among state and federal institutions, as well as anyone who has mostly strong wind conditions on a regular basis, polyester does not have as bright colors as nylon, but it will last longer, especially when exposed to the elements.  But because heavy-duty polyester is a heavier material, it does not flutter as nicely as nylon in lighter breezes.  Be careful, though, because polyester materials can be many things.  It also can be a lightweight material used for “economy” flags, so make sure you buy the right polyester for your needs.

Cotton

Cotton doesn’t have the durability of polyester and offers softer colors than nylon. Its soft texture, biodegradable nature, and pliability make it ideal for indoor use.

Cotton is also the official material used for the burial flags of U.S. veterans. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, all American burial flags for veterans are supposed to be made of cotton.  They also have larger stars relative to the flag size than standard U.S. flags.
