If your teeth feel sore when it’s cold out or you feel a sharp pain when you bite into an ice cream cone, you may have sensitive teeth. Teeth sensitivity is one of the most common oral health issues and, fortunately, it is treatable. Here are five tips dentists want you to know.

5 Tips Dentists Suggest to Minimize Tooth Sensitivity

1. Chew Gum

Tooth sensitivity is typically a result of weakened enamel. Though dentists once advised against chewing gum for the sake of dental health, recent research has caused them to change their tune. Now, chewing sugarless, ADA-approved gum is seen as beneficial in helping prevent tooth decay, even rebuilding and strengthening tooth enamel. Because gum chewing promotes saliva production, it helps wash away the bacteria that causes plaque that can weaken enamel. Gum varieties that use the non-cavity inducing sweetning alternatives, like xylitol, are best, as it cleans and strengthens enamel, in addition to encouraging increased amounts of saliva.

2. Avoid Certain Foods

dentistsSome food options, especially those that need to be served at extremely hot and or incredibly cold temperatures, can be painful to bite into, if you have teeth sensitivity issues. Acidic and sugary foods, such as citrus fruit or pastries, should also be avoided, as these can break down enamel, exacerbating your teeth’s sensitivity. When experiencing tooth pain related to your teeth’s sensitivity, it’s best to eat foods rich in calcium, such as kale, almonds, broccoli, and low-fat dairy or fortified dairy alternatives, as this natural mineral strengthens enamel.

3. Brush Gently With Special Toothpaste

Brushing your teeth too often or too aggressively can actually cause more harm than good, wearing down the gums and increasing tooth sensitivity. Always be sure to brush your teeth gently while using a soft-bristled brush and anti-sensitivity toothpaste, which contains ingredients that protect your teeth from the harmful agents that lead to increased pain and sensitivity.

4. Use a Mouthguard

Bruxism, otherwise known as teeth grinding, is a common cause of teeth sensitivity, as well. Often occurring at night during sleep, many people aren’t even aware that they are doing it, until a dentist assesses their mouths during a checkup. Wearing a mouthguard as you sleep can prevent the unconscious teeth grinding that wears down tooth enamel. It can also prevent daytime the jaw pain and headaches that are also symptomatic of teeth grinding.

5. Get Your Roots Check Out

Typically a consequence of of gum disease, exposed roots can also cause sensitivity. Ask your dentist about gum treatment, if you notice the roots of your teeth are exposed. This involves covering the roots with bonding materials and sealants that protect them. You may also need a root canal to remove infection and bacteria.
