Eye diseases and conditions come in different forms and develop for many reasons. Some may be due to poor eye care or trauma, while others may be inherited. If you have a family history of an eye condition, schedule an appointment with an eye doctor. They can see if there are any warning signs and give advice on how to prevent or slow the onset of these issues.

A Basic Guide to Genetic Eye Conditions

1. Glaucoma

Glaucoma, one of the leading causes of blindness, occurs when the optic nerve begins to deteriorate because of pressure from a fluid buildup. Blockages in the channel that normally drains these fluids can be a contributing factor, but eye doctors believe that this condition is likely inherited. There are two types: open-angle and angle-closure. Early symptoms include eye pain, blurry vision, halos around light, and headaches—all of which warrant a trip to the eye doctor. Reducing pressure on the nerve early on may save your vision. Have an eye exam every 3-5 years if you’re at risk.

2. Macular Degeneration

This inhibits your ability to read, drive, recognize faces and colors, or see clearly in general. There are two types, dry and wet, which are believed to be genetic. It occurs in three stages; the earliest doesn’t have symptoms, which is why you should have regular eye exams if a loved one has the condition. There is currently no cure, but you can take preventative steps such as eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly.

3. Abnormalities and Alignment Issues

Various abnormalities, such as being nearsighted or farsighted, and alignment problems, like strabismus, are thought to be genetic. Most manifest in childhood, which is why pediatric eye exams are key. They can be easily managed with corrective lenses, though eye alignment issues likely require basic surgery. The faster you address the issue, the fewer negative effects it will have. Regular eye exams are a must if your family has a history of these conditions.
