As a woman, bleeding can either be a routine phenomenon or a sign of trouble. Sometimes, it is difficult to decipher which it is, such as when you experience spotting between periods. According to gynecologists, there are several factors that can cause spotting, some of which are nothing to worry about. Here are three potential reasons you may be spotting and what to do about them.

Possible Reasons for Spotting

1. Hormonal Birth Control

Hormone-based contraceptives, such as the pill, patch, or injection, often cause spotting during the first few months of use. The combination pill, which uses a combination of estrogen and progesterone hormones, is the most common type to cause spotting, a phenomenon known as “breakthrough bleeding.” It is a result of changes to the uterine lining caused by the hormonal changes. Spotting can also occur while on hormonal contraception if you forget to take your pill, which results in hormone fluctuations. If you experience continued spotting with these methods, talk to your gynecologist about trying a different brand or dosage. The mini-pill (progestin-only) and hormonal IUDs commonly cause continued spotting.

2. Pregnancy

gynecologistSpotting may also be an early sign of pregnancy. It typically occurs between five and eight weeks and may be a result of hormonal changes. While it may be nothing to worry about, you should consult your doctor if you are pregnant and spotting, as it can signal an issue. One example is an ectopic pregnancy, in which the fetus is growing somewhere other than the uterus, such as the fallopian tubes. Ectopic pregnancies are dangerous and require immediate medical attention. Other symptoms of such pregnancies include abdominal or shoulder pain on one side and dizziness.

3. Physical Issues

Besides pregnancy, other physical changes that can cause spotting to include fibroids, or abnormal growths in the uterus, uterine or cervical polyps, polycystic ovary syndrome, and cesarean scar defects. Infections including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and urinary tract infections (UTI) can also cause spotting. These issues should be addressed by a health care provider as soon as possible as they can be dangerous if untreated.
