Arranging your furniture properly can help you maximize your space and improve its look. There are a few key rules to follow when laying out your pieces so that your rooms will be both functional and attractive. Here are a few best practices to keep in mind.

A Guide to Arranging Furniture

1. Give Them Space

It’s important to have space to move around your furniture and use it comfortably. There should be at least 30 inches of space around pieces that people will be walking by. Leave 14 to 18 inches between your sofa and coffee table. Leave 36 inches around the dining table to allow people to get in and out of their chairs, and place six inches of room between each chair at the table. A bed should have at least two feet on either side so that you can easily get out.

2. Choose a Focal Point

furnitureEvery room should have one focal point, and everything in it should be arranged in relation to that point. Choose yours based on how you will use the room. For example, in a family space where you’ll be watching television, the TV should be the focal point. In a dining room, you may have a fireplace or a chandelier centered over the table. In a living room that you’ll be using to entertain friends, place the furniture in front of a dramatic piece of art, fireplace, or window with a beautiful view.

3. Encourage Conversation

Arrange your furniture in a way that encourages people to talk. For example, angle chairs toward each other and place two couches opposite one another with a table in-between. Leave no more than eight feet of space between seating areas to allow for easy conversation.
