No matter what your student’s grade level, schools will be administering the new PSAT in October. This July, NorthStar Tutors, NJ is offering specialized classes devoted to the new test, so you can prepare your student.
For juniors, the PSAT is extremely important because it will help prepare them for the SAT/ACT college readiness test the following year. The PSAT is also still the national merit qualifier; the better your student does on the test, the more likely they’ll be eligible to receive financial aid incentives when applying for college. NorthStar Tutors will be offering PSAT classes throughout the whole month of July, as well as one-week, intensive courses from August 17–24, from 9 a.m.–12 p.m.
There are several important changes to the new PSAT; the first being that it has been redesigned to be a better indicator of college readiness. Students will be tested on words in context rather than having to memorize large lists of vocabulary words they’re likely to forget later. There will also be more critical thinking components, such as evidence-based reading exercises, and a greater emphasis on analyzing science and history.
The new PSAT focuses on problems with real-world context; essentially, the things your student will likely face in college and later in their careers. Rather than focusing on difficult, theoretical mathematical concepts, the PSAT has been redesigned to assess those mathematical skills students are most likely to actually use.
