A puddle of fluid under your car is a sure sign you need auto repairs. But, how urgent the problem is depends on what's leaking. Here's how you can identify the source of the fluid in your parking space and what to do about each one.

How to Locate a Leak

1. Oil

If the leak is yellow, brown, or black and located under the front half of your car, engine oil is a likely culprit. Make sure the oil tank is filled and the cap is tightened since it can easily seep out from there. If you keep finding fresh spots, or your oil gets low too quickly, you probably have an actual leak. Also, if you notice the oil is very dark brown or black, you probably need an oil change.

2. Brake Fluid

Auto RepairBrake fluid is most often found near the wheels and is slick and yellow or light brown. There isn't much brake fluid in your car, and without it, you may not be able to slow or stop, so a brake fluid leak needs urgent auto repairs.

3. Transmission Fluid

A reddish fluid under the middle or front of your car comes from the transmission, where it acts as a lubricant. If you have a manual transmission, you'll see thick brown gear oil instead of red transmission fluid. The level of remaining gear oil can only be determined from underneath the car.

4. Coolant

Your car uses a bright yellow, green, or pink coolant to transfer heat away from the engine and get rid of it through the radiator. Leaks are located under the engine or radiator at the front of the car. Don't attempt DIY refills or auto repairs; the coolant is pressurized and can be hot enough to burn.

5. Water

Sometimes, a drip under the car isn't a leak at all. Your car's air conditioner can produce condensation that drips onto the ground near the rear of the vehicle. Clear fluid in this location on a hot day can be safely ignored unless you smell fuel.
