Adding a garage to your property can be a smart move to increase storage and parking space and add value to your home. Before you start excavating the site, there are a number of factors to consider to make sure your garage will be functional and accessible. Here are some of the main considerations.

What to Think About During Garage Construction Planning

1. Location

ExcavatingYour garage will need to be placed somewhere on your property where it won't interfere with other structures and landscaping in your yard. If you rely on a septic system for waste disposal, the garage can't be located over the tank or drain field; and you'll have to check the placement of utility lines to make sure excavating in the area you choose is safe. Also, consider whether you want your garage to be attached to your home or freestanding. If it's attached, consider where the door will be inside the house.

2. Size

One- and two-car garages are common, but you can also create a much larger structure if needed. Consider both your current needs and any future plans. The more cars and other vehicles you have to store, and the more space you require for a workshop area, the more space you'll have to dedicate to your new garage.

3. Access

In addition to a door inside your home, you'll also need to plan for vehicle access to the front of the garage. Simple driveways can be installed quickly and simply with the help of a sand and gravel provider. Make sure your plan is free from sharp corners and steep grades, as this will make use more enjoyable.
