One of the most effective car maintenance tasks is replacing your tires. However, if you’re unaccustomed to the process, you may not know how to choose the right set. While you should consider aspects like size, type, and price, don’t overlook the speed rating. Here’s what you should know about this key component.

The Basics on Speed Ratings

Format & Location

On the sidewall of your tires is a series of letters and numbers. Each character or set corresponds to a different aspect of the tire, such as the type, width, and wheel diameter. The very last character is always a letter; this is the speed rating.

Meaning

The speed rating refers to the performance threshold. It's the maximum speed it can and should be driven at before it starts underperforming. The rating system uses the English alphabet; generally, higher speeds correspond to letters further in the alphabet. The only exception is the letter “H,” which falls after “U,” and has a maximum speed of 130 mph. It’s commonly believed that “H” previously signified “high performance.”

Standards

tiresMost people will be dealing with tires rated “S” through “Z.” These cover the gamut of popular consumer vehicles. For example, the speed rating “H” is recommended for coupes and some sports cars. If you have a minivan or a sedan, speed rating “T” is optimal.

Consequences

Driving on tires with speed ratings that are incompatible with the manufacturer’s recommendations will affect your overall driving experience and sense of control. Since the tires are the only point of contact with the road, they’re responsible for how well the car grips the surface, turns corners, and brakes. If you deviate too far, steering your car will feel strange and unwieldy.

Regarding Maintenance

Even with the correct speed rating, you’ll still need to keep an eye out for normal maintenance issues. Make sure they are properly inflated and replace them once the treads are worn down. Don’t forget about wheel alignments either.
