What are the symptoms and risks?

In its early stages, this condition will result in red, swollen, inflamed gums and bleeding when you brush. If left unattended, this condition can also lead to receding gums, painful chewing, bad breath, and loose teeth that eventually need to be extracted and replaced by tooth implants to restore your smile. While poor oral hygiene is the primary cause of gum disease, other risk factors include smoking, diabetes, obesity, hormonal changes, genetics, and certain medications.
