A smoothly paved driveway is a boost for your curb appeal, safer for your vehicles, and much more pleasant to drive on every day than a dilapidated surface. You know that yours needs paving, but you may have been putting it off since you don’t know what to expect. The following guide will help you plan out the project for a time that’s convenient for you.

Timeline for Paving an Asphalt Driveway

The Typical Construction Timeline

Paving construction can be broken down into three steps: preparation, paving, and curing. Preparation, which involves removing the old pavement and installing a sub-base material, can usually be done in one day. The paving itself typically takes one day, too, as the hot mix is applied and a roller compacts it down into a smooth surface.

drivewayAfter the paving’s done, the asphalt needs to cure, during which time you should keep vehicles off of it. This takes between three to five days, depending on weather conditions. Your new driveway will cure more quickly in sunny warm weather than overcast skies. For three weeks after paving, you can drive on the surface to get in and out of your garage but should avoid parking on it, as it’s still finishing up the curing.

Factors That Affect Your Timeline

It’s important to remember that while most paving projects are completed in two days and cured in five, every project is unique. If you have a surface that needs to be excavated for a new driveway, it will take longer to prepare. Poor weather conditions will delay all stages of the project. The size and pitch will also affect how long it takes because larger and steeper projects are more time-consuming.
