Your car’s engine consists of many moving auto parts working together to power your vehicle. Drive belts are among these parts that supply different engine components with power. Take a moment to learn about the different types of drive belts so you can replace them in a timely manner and avoid expensive car repairs.

3 Types of Drive Belts & Signs You Need to Replace Them

1. Serpentine Belt

A common auto part in cars built after 1990, the long serpentine belt is responsible for numerous engine components, including the cooling fan, power steering pump, alternator, and air conditioning compressor. If it loosens or breaks, these components stop working and your engine could suffer from heat-related damage. Serpentine belts last between 36,000 to 50,000 miles. The belt makes screeching noises when you start your car or turn abruptly if it needs replacing.

2. Timing Belt

auto partsAlso known as a camshaft drive belt, this notched, rubber timing belt connects the crankshaft to the camshaft so the former can turn the latter. The camshaft subsequently moves in time with the pistons to open and close engine valves. This belt benefits from a replacement every 50,000 to 60,000 miles. If it breaks, your engine stops working and sustains valve and piston damage among other issues. Warning signs of an impending breakage include slapping noises from the engine, signaling a slipped belt.

3. V-Belt

If your vehicle is older, it may feature multiple v-belts with rubber teeth. They are called v-belts because of their tapered shape, with different belts powering different engine-related auto parts, such as the alternator and power steering pump. They are shorter than other drive belts and less susceptible to slipping; however, because v-belts are used in older models, they can be challenging to replace. These belts last up to 40,000 miles. Signs of failing v-belts include squealing noises and faulty alternator charges that cause your car to overheat.
