Interior paint jobs have the power to transform the look and feel of the rooms in your home. If you’re searching for ways to make your bedrooms, bathrooms, and living areas appear more spacious and open, you can use color strategically to do so. Here are a few tips to help you get started.

How to Use Interior Paint to Open Up a Space

1. Paint Ceilings Lighter Colors

interior paintIf a room feels too small, paint the ceiling, moldings, and trim a lighter color—such as white, soft gray, light blue, or lavender hues—than the walls to create the illusion that the space is taller and larger than it is.

2. Use the Same Color

If you want a room to feel open, avoid hard edges and lines. An accent wall, for example, can draw attention to the sharp contrast, making the boundaries of the room more apparent. Instead, use a continuous monochromatic color scheme to ensure clean lines and a spacious feeling.

3. Lengthen With Stripes

Vertical stripes—added with paint or striped wallpaper—will make your ceilings feel taller, while horizontal ones will elongate the space. Keep the stripes as narrow and light in color as possible; wider stripes detract from the length, and darker colors appear to advance toward you.

4. Camouflage Distractions

HVAC vents, bricks, and architectural beams can interfere with the flow of a room, causing it to look smaller. Paint them the same color as your walls to camouflage them and open up the space. Apply oil-based primers and paints to metals using a roller brush and extension pole for hard-to-reach areas. For timber, use wood primer and acrylic paints, and always stroke with the grain.
