While painting drywall is fairly straightforward and simple, it takes a little preparation to achieve the smooth, even coat you want. Between repairing imperfections and purchasing appropriate building materials to do the job, you’ll want to give the project the time and dedication it deserves. Before you put the paint roller to the walls, use these tips to prepare them.

How to Prepare Drywall for Painting

1. Remove Dust & Debris

Over time, walls accumulate dirt and dust. Use a dry washcloth or brush to wipe away spider webs, dust, and dried dirt. Next, using a damp cloth and mild cleaner, wipe away any dark marks you see on the walls. Allow these areas to dry fully before doing any additional work.

2. Repair Obvious Blemishes

Use drywall compound or painter’s putty to fill in holes, smoothing them with a knockdown knife, scraper, or your building material of choice. Fill hairline cracks at inside corners with a thin line of caulk, and smooth the edges using your fingertip. Let these areas dry according to the instructions on the products used.

3. Apply a Primer

Drywall requires a primer before paint can be applied. The putty or compound used to repair the uneven surfaces will absorb the paint differently than the drywall, so use a primer to create a smooth base for the paint. It might vary, but in general, the primer needs 24 hours to dry.
