Your brakes are one of the most important safety features on your vehicle. As a result, this is one aspect of auto maintenance that should never be overlooked. There are some common questions that most drivers have when they take in their vehicles for brake services. Review the answers below to maximize the usable life span of your brakes.

Brake Services FAQ

How long do brake pads last?

Most front axle brake pads last around 30,000 miles, while rear axle brake pads last about 50,000 to 60,000 miles. However, this varies depending on how you drive and the conditions you drive in regularly. For example, those who frequently drive in the city in stop and go traffic will wear their pads out faster than those who mostly drive on highways. When your pads wear down dangerously low, you will hear screeching every time you apply pressure to the pedal.

How do I break in new brakes?

brake servicesBreaking in the system is recommended when you get new pads or rotors. It will extend the pad’s life and reduce unwanted noise. Accelerate the car to 35 miles per hour, then gently brake to a slow roll. Remove your foot from the pedal for at least 30 seconds, and repeat this process five times. Then, accelerate to 55 miles per hour and slow to 20 miles per hour, taking the same rest and doing this five more times. Leave your car parked for at least an hour to let the brakes cool.

Does brake fluid need to be changed?

Brake fluid, or hydraulic fluid, is responsible for moving the components of your braking system. If it’s low or too dirty, the system will not function properly. The fluid should be flushed, just as all your other fluids should be. This should generally be done every two years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Why do rotors warp?

Warping describes uneven wear of your brake rotors. Breaking in your pads or rotors when you get them will help to prevent this. You should also avoid driving through deep puddles of water since cold water will cool off your metal rotors too quickly. Cleaning your rotors and brakes at least once a month will also remove the dirt that can cause warping.
