During inclement weather, many runners turn to the treadmill to continue their training. Unfortunately, while running inside, back pain can follow. Here’s why you may experience this pain, and what you can do to prevent it.

Why Does My Treadmill Cause Back Pain?

Treadmill-induced pain typically occurs in the lower or upper back or the shoulder muscles. Most people who experience this pain do so because their running posture on the treadmill is different from their posture outdoors or on a track. Placing your hands on the bars in front of you will likely cause shoulder and upper back pain, while lower back pain is most often caused by a hunched position.

How Can I Avoid Back Pain When Running Indoors?

back painBe mindful of your posture as you begin your workout. Warm up with brisk walking for five to ten minutes while paying attention to your form. Check in with your body regularly to make sure you’re assuming your natural gait and position as much as possible. Placing a mirror next to the treadmill will help you check yourself for good form. Wear running shoes that fit properly and aren’t worn unevenly, just as you would on the road.

If you feel sudden or severe pain, stop. Do not push through the pain as this may cause or worsen an injury; instead, pause the treadmill, and begin cooling down and gently stretching out the area. If this worsens the pain, schedule an appointment with a doctor or chiropractor as soon as possible.
