If you have rabbits, you know they have special health needs, and it’s important to recognize when they’re ill. Many symptoms are shared by multiple illnesses, and a veterinarian is the only person who can truly diagnose the issue. Familiarize yourself with those below, so you’ll know when it’s time to visit the animal clinic.

3 Symptoms of Illnesses in Rabbits

1. Nasal Discharge

Any discharge from your rabbit’s nose usually means that they’re dealing with some sort of infection. Snuffles is one of the most common. When these bacteria attack their immune system, nasal discharge is an immediate side effect. A veterinarian can often treat the issue with antibiotics. If you have a flock of rabbits, isolate any that show signs of infection right away, so they don’t pass the bacteria to others.

2. Lethargy

veterinarianLethargy is a common symptom of numerous health issues. The rabbit may sleep or sit stagnant for long periods, and they may avoid eating and drinking. When they are active, they can appear low-energy. It could be heat stroke or GI stasis, both of which can be fatal when untreated. A veterinarian can properly diagnose the issue and then explore treatment options. Avoid these complications by keeping your rabbit in a comfortable, even temperature, and ensure they get a healthy diet with both fiber and protein.

3. Head Tilt

It may seem cute at first when your rabbit tilts its head to one side. Once it stays, however, it’s a sign that they’re dealing with head tilt. There are a few causes, including trauma, stroke, and ear infections. The eyes will often move side-to-side, and in general, the rabbit will have poor balance and coordination. Because of the varying causes, treatment approaches can all be different.
