You rely on your bathroom plumbing to function well every day. In addition to working with a plumber for repairs, you should perform a little routine care and maintenance to keep everything running smoothly. Follow the guidelines below to prevent issues such as clogs or prematurely wearing parts.

How to Care for Bathroom Plumbing

1. Shower Drains

The most common issue for shower drains are hair clogs. Install a strainer over the drain, which will catch hair and soap residue before it enters the drain. You’ll need to clean it out regularly. Clean the shower head as well with a scrub brush to prevent the buildup of mineral deposits.

2. Toilets

Put other items such as facial tissue, cotton swabs, and sanitary products in the garbage. If you have young children, install a seat lid lock on the toilet to prevent young ones from flushing objects for fun. Note that even wipes and towelettes labeled as flush-safe can threaten your plumbing.

3. Sink Faucets

Low water pressure tends to be the most common issue with sink faucets. Clean the faucet weekly to prevent mineral buildup around the spout. If your pressure still seems inadequate, then the aerator inside the fixture likely has debris and limescale buildup on it. It will need to be removed and cleaned. If cleansing doesn’t fix the problem, the part may need to be replaced altogether, or there may be a deeper plumbing issue at hand.
