Your garage door gets a considerable amount of daily use and must withstand all kinds of weather conditions. To help it last as long as possible, it requires some regular maintenance. Below you’ll find the key information you need to keep it operating smoothly for as long as possible.

Do:

Test the sensors.

Garage door sensors prevent the door from shutting when something is obstructing it, such as a vehicle, object, child, or pet. It is an important safety feature and should be tested monthly. Make sure the LED is illuminated, indicating the sensors on each side of the door are aligned. Then press the button to close the door. The door should stop closing and open fully. If it doesn’t, wipe the sensors with a dry, clean cloth and test again.

Wash occasionally.

If you notice visible grit, pollen, or other debris on your door, clean it off. Use warm water and a mild detergent on the door to remove grime. For particularly tough stains, you can apply a bleach solution, but only after completely rinsing the door of detergent. Remember to wipe clean the weather stripping along the top and sides.

Don't:

Use a pressure washer.

Garage doorsDon’t use a pressure washer on your garage door. It can gouge or leave scars on vinyl or fiberglass. Instead, use a garden hose with a sprayer. Even then, be careful to keep the nozzle at least three feet from the door.

Forget to test the backup battery.

The backup battery allows the door to operate even during a power outage. Make sure it is working properly so you don't find yourself unable to get your car in or out. Unplug the opener and press the wall button. Replace the batteries if the opener doesn't work, and then continue to check them every 6 to 12 months thereafter.
