Drywall is one of the key structural and aesthetic building blocks in your home. When it suffers damage, you may need to replace it to restore stability to the dwelling. Here’s a guide to how you can tell when you need new drywall.

3 Clues You Should Replace Your Drywall

1. Bulging Walls

A common source of drywall deterioration is water damage. When water leaks down your house, either from a hole in your roof or due to a burst pipe, it will eventually make its way to your drywall. Over time, the moisture will force your walls to protrude outward and warp them. This deformity ultimately weakens the overall integrity of your home’s structure. Thus, it’s necessary to schedule a replacement wall installation appointment to avoid an eventual collapse.

2. Errant Seams

drywallInstalling drywall can be a complicated business, and it’s common for less experienced DIYers to make mistakes. For instance, if a seam is left catty-corner of a door or window, it will create a weak spot in the drywall. Should the house settle or the soil shift, this weak spot in your wall can soon develop into a serious crack. If you spot the crack, there’s a possibility that it can be resolved with a simple patch job. However, it’s also likely that you will need to completely replace the drywall.

3. Big Holes

Since drywall is not a heavily-fortified material, it doesn’t take much force to damage it. If an appliance falls against the wall, for instance, you may be looking at a sizable hole. While small holes can be patched, this repair tactic is not advised for a hole that  exceeds a few feet wide. The extent of the patchworking required to fix larger holes will ultimately make for an unsightly wall, so it’s better to simply replace it.
