Flossing regularly is essential for optimal dental health. However, not many children are exactly thrilled to do it every day. If it’s a struggle to get your child to floss, you probably feel pretty frustrated. Here are some different ways to get your child excited about flossing before their next trip to the pediatric dentist.

3 Tips to Get Your Child to Floss

1. Set an Example

A pediatric dentist may suggest having your child watch you floss between each of your teeth. Slide the floss up and down gently and be careful not to snap it. Remember to use a new piece of floss for each food to prevent reinserting food and bacteria. Then, have your child practice on themselves.

2. Let Them Pick Their Flossing Products

When it’s time to buy new dental supplies at the drugstore, a pediatric dentist may recommend letting your child select their own flossing products. Child-friendly floss comes in a variety of different colors and may even feature your little one’s favorite cartoon character. If they have a role in choosing their supplies, they may get more excited about flossing.

3. Floss Together

It’s a good idea to floss together as a family as often as possible. Flossing won’t be as tedious if it’s done with other people. If your child sees you flossing, they will most likely follow your example. You can also offer a reward if they floss twice a day for a week. Set up a chart in the bathroom—hang up a small whiteboard or print out a weekly calendar page—and have your child write down their flossing times. At the end of the week, treat them to a movie or an ice cream outing if they complete the floss challenge.
