As important as seeing your dentist every six months for deep teeth cleanings and checkups is, it’s just as essential to practice proper oral hygiene at home. It prevents a wide array of dental health problems, including bad breath, cavities, gingivitis and gum disease, abscesses, and bone loss. Help your smile stay healthy and beautiful by following these do’s and don’ts.

Do:

Brush gently for two minutes twice a day and floss daily.

Brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day using the proper technique. Use a soft-bristled brush to avoid aggressive brushing that wears down enamel and gum tissue. Remove food particles your toothbrush cannot reach by flossing once a day. Wrap the filament around every tooth to create a "C" shape, and go below the gumline. Ask your dentist for tips if necessary. Use plenty of floss, so there is enough clean filament for each tooth.

Drink plenty of water.

dentistHydrate throughout the day to promote healthy saliva production. Saliva and water both flush food particles and bacteria away from the mouth to minimize decay-causing acid and plaque formation. Always drink water after eating or drinking sugary beverages, including alcohol and fruit juice.

Don’t:

Forget to rinse your toothbrush.

Brush your tongue and then rinse your toothbrush after each brushing, so you are not moving the same bacteria around. Rinse the brush completely before you store it, so any lingering bacteria do not multiply.

Eat too many sugary foods.

Limit your intake of sweet treats and simple carbohydrates, as both work with the mouth bacteria to form acids and plaque. Eat foods that naturally clean the teeth instead, such as apples, celery, and carrots. Dentists always recommend balanced, nutrient-dense diets as part of proper oral hygiene and health.
