Whether you’re trying to eat healthier or cut costs on delivery, there are many excellent reasons to cook at home. If you’re a novice in the kitchen, however, there are some basic precautions you should take to limit the risk of property damage or injury. In addition to keeping a comprehensive homeowners insurance policy, use the tips below to stay safe.

3 Tips to Prevent Cooking Fires

1. Keep Your Workspace Clean & Organized

Crumbs, grease, and other cooking debris can become hazards when not disposed of properly. Wipe down the surface of your stove, clean out any fats, sauces, or liquids that have dripped or bubbled over onto the floor of your oven, and empty the toaster of bread crumbs. By removing this detritus, you’ll limit your risk of inadvertently setting off your smoke alarm or causing a fire. In addition, keep the electronic gadgets on your countertop organized and away from your sink. Use power strips to distribute power evenly and avoid overheating. Keep cloth pot holders and paper items like cookbooks far from sources of heat.

2. Install a Smoke Detector

Smoke detectors provide early warnings that something is awry in your kitchen. However, these devices can be sensitive, set off even by harmless steam from a boiling pot of water. Don't mount the detector directly in the kitchen. Instead, place it in an adjoining room about 10 feet away. This will prevent many false readings while still keeping you safe.

3. Never Leave a Lit Flame Unattended

Don’t leave your kitchen without turning off your stove, oven, or other electrical appliances. Frying pans left on hot burners can cause grease fires. If you’re not there to react quickly and put it out, the fire can rapidly grow out of control. Avoid having to file a homeowners insurance claim by staying alert and focused on the task at hand.
