As a parent, your child’s health and well-being is your top priority. When anything seems off, it can be concerning. Fortunately, when you understand the common ailments kids can have, it’s much easier to address them effectively. One oral health issue that affects many children is thrush. Here’s what dentists want you to know.

What Is Oral Thrush?

Oral thrush typically looks like a white coating on the surface of the child’s tongue. It rubs off easily, unlike milk which may look similar but will not come off as quickly. It’s particularly common in babies under a year old. Your baby may not seem bothered by it, but you might notice they’re reluctant or challenging to feed. They may also drool. Reluctance to feed is due to soreness that can be a symptom of thrush. It isn’t dangerous, but you should see your dentist or pediatrician for treatment if it doesn’t go away on its own or if your child is getting thrush repeatedly.

What Causes It?

dentistOral thrush is a fungal infection. It occurs when the microorganisms in the mouth are unbalanced, causing candida albicans, or yeast, to grow excessively, producing an infection. Sometimes, this is a result of antibiotics, which can kill both good and bad bacteria in the bowels, causing imbalance. Kids can also contract the infection through infected objects, or during birth from the mother. Children with compromised immune systems and those who use inhaled corticosteroids have a higher risk of developing oral thrush.
