If you’re a horse enthusiast, you’ve probably thought about constructing a riding arena on your property. Although doing so is more intensive than simply marking off a large rectangle and filling it with bulk sand, a little organization and planning can help you construct a beautiful outdoor ring in no time at all. The guide below breaks down the process.

How to Build a Riding Arena From Scratch

1. Select the Site

The first step to building an outdoor ring is choosing the right location. You will need an ample amount of space that is reasonably level. Additionally, there should be a minimum amount of shade, so the ground dries more quickly after it rains. Once you find the perfect spot, it is wise to test the soil. The results will reveal if you’re likely to run into any issues when constructing the base.

2. Prepare the Perimeter

After all, you want easy access to the ring from both the barn and the driveway. In other words, you may have to lay down some gravel paths. Now is also the time to start meeting with fencing contractors or sourcing the supplies to build the fence yourself.

3. Build the Base

Once the site and the area around it have been prepared, it’s time to dig out the ring and install the base. The specific steps for building a sturdy base with adequate drainage will depend on the results of the soil testing. However, limestone or bluestone gravel should usually be placed first, topped by stone dust to fill it in. Bulk sand is typically used as the “footing” or topmost layer. Consider building a low retaining wall around the area, as well, to keep out moisture. Once this is done, you’re ready to saddle up.
