Every winter, Hawaii receives plenty of rain. While this winter is mild compared to other parts of the world, you should still take proactive measures to keep your trees safe and healthy. Too much water and wind can be harmful if you’re not careful. Use the tree care checklist below so you don’t miss anything important.

Hawaii Winter Tree Care Checklist

1. Stake Young Trees

High winds can knock over trees without strong established root systems. Support your young or small trees with two or three stakes.  Place them about a foot and a half away from the trunk, then use staking straps or canvas to wrap them.

2. Turn Off Irrigation

Because the yard will be getting a lot of water through rainfall, adding more with irrigation is wasteful and can drown your plants. Turn off your irrigation system whenever the weather forecast predicts rain.

3. Prune

tree trimmingWinter in Hawaii is the best time to handle your pruning since all that extra water will promote growth. Hire a professional to handle tree trimming. They’ll know how to identify the weak branches to remove, promote a healthy branch structure, and make cuts that won’t damage the tree.

4. Check Yard Drainage

Poor drainage systems will become especially problematic during torrential rainstorms. If the water doesn’t have somewhere to go, it will pool around your trees and drown them. After a storm passes through, go outside to check for pooling water. If you find puddles, have a landscaping professional fix your drainage system.
