Many insects thrive in Georgia’s heat and humidity. Once the pests enter your yard, they only have a short journey to the house. As many unwanted guests carry disease, it’s best to call an exterminator as soon as you notice a problem. Doing so could keep your family safe, while also preventing severe property damage. To know when to reach out for help, here are a few pests commonly found in Georgia to keep on your radar.

3 Pests You Might Encounter in Your Georgia Home

1. Silverfish

Silverfish are drawn to moisture, which is why you might see the insects crawling around kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. The bugs are identified by their long, slender bodies covered in silver scales. Although silverfish won’t hurt humans, they eat grains, vegetables, and sugars, putting your food at risk of contamination. They’ll also eat fabric, carpeting, wallpaper, and glue — putting your property in danger. As silverfish need ample water to survive, repair damp areas in the house and turn on a dehumidifier to reduce moisture levels.

2. Ticks

Ticks often enter yards on wildlife. Domestic pets playing outside become the new hosts, bringing the insects inside the house. The parasites, of which there are many species, latch onto hosts for blood meals. They can transfer Lyme disease and other serious illnesses to humans and animals, so seek medical help immediately if bitten. An exterminator can let you know when different species are active, so you can take measures to avoid wooded areas and limit time in the yard.

3. Mosquitoes

The insects need water to reproduce and thrive, which is why they also congregate near damp areas inside and outside of the house. A mosquito bite isn’t only itchy, it can be dangerous. The flying pests can spread West Nile virus and malaria. Fixing drainage problems will eliminate standing water that attracts insects. As the bugs are also drawn to sweet-smelling substances, remember to tie trash bags and keep lids firmly on garbage cans.
