Missing teeth can cause serious oral health issues and impact your ability to eat and speak. It’s important to replace them, and dental implants are one of the best long-term solutions. While it can be an extensive process, the end result is a lasting, natural-looking replacement that will last for many years. Here are the answers to all your questions about this option.

Dental Implant FAQ

What are they?

Dental implants are a cosmetic dentistry solution for one or more missing teeth. They include a titanium rod secured into the jaw, an abutment attached to the top, and a prosthetic tooth that’s secured to it. Multiple implants can be used to hold a denture plate if all of the teeth are missing due to gum disease or other issues.

How are they installed?

dental-implants-anderson-dental-groupTo begin the procedure, your dentist or surgeon will implant a titanium rod into the jawbone. A healing period will follow while the bone fuses with the rod and holds it in place. The dentist will then attach the abutment in a second surgery. During that recovery period, they’ll craft a prosthetic tooth that can then be easily secured to the abutment. It’s shaped to fit perfectly in the socket and will match your bite pattern so it fits in with the other teeth.

How long does the procedure take?

Your mouth is extremely sensitive, and with heavy surgery like implants, a longer recovery time is needed. On average, six months are required after the titanium rod is implanted, though it takes only a few weeks for the gums to heal around the abutment. Considering time for initial and follow-up appointments as well as time for the prosthetic tooth to be crafted, the overall process from start to finish can take upwards of eight months.

How long do they last?

With proper care, dental implants can last 25 years or more. You’ll still need to brush and floss around them and avoid any hard foods that may damage them. Treat them the same as your natural teeth, and see the dentist regularly to ensure you get the most from them.
