If it has been a while since you visited your storage unit, now is the perfect time to do a little cleaning. Spring cleaning a storage unit provides room for new items and makes it easier to maximize the space. Use these tips to get started.

4 Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Storage Unit

1. Bring the Right Products & Tools

Pack dust masks, brooms, dust pans, garbage bags, clean rags, and rubber gloves. Take everything out of your storage unit and sweep it to remove dust, cobwebs, mothballs, and other debris. Create a solution of equal parts vinegar and water. Use the rags and vinegar spray to clean and sanitize plastic containers, sporting equipment, and wooden furniture.

Go through your boxes and donate items you have not used in at least a year that have no sentimental value. If you are unsure about an item, consider whether it will do more good in storage or in the hands of someone else. Put donation items into boxes for easy drop-off at your local thrift or consignment shop.

3. Replaced Damaged Boxes

Replace torn or damaged boxes with plastic containers. These containers keep out dust, moisture, and any potential insects or vermin. Additionally, you can easily see what’s inside; bring a notebook and marker with you to write out what is in each box. Slip the pages in the front of every bin, so they stay visible.

4. Restack to Create a More Accessible Unit

Rearrange your storage unit to create a walkway down the middle. Place containers with items you do not need immediately in the back, such as family heirlooms. Keep items you use throughout the year in the front, such as seasonal sporting equipment and clothes or holiday decorations. Keep heavy bins on the bottom, and stack light containers on top to avoid item damage.
