3 Yoga Poses for Runners, St. Charles, Missouri

If you’re a runner or training to compete in a marathon, you might benefit from supplemental conditioning. Yoga is a mindful activity that can improve a runner’s strength and flexibility to reduce the risk of injury and boost speed. If you’ve never taken a yoga class before, here are a few of the best poses that a runner can incorporate in their workout regimen.

3 Types of Yoga Poses to Help With Running

1. Downward Dog

Downward dog is one of the essential poses repeated frequently in many yoga classes. It strengthens the whole body and helps to increase flexibility. To perform downward dog, begin in a plank position. Exhale and push the hips upward and back towards the sky. Your body should be in the shape of an inverted “V”. Keep the palms pressed flat on the mat and your abdomen tightened; continue to inhale and exhale through the pose.

2. Bridge Pose

yogaThe bridge pose is designed to strengthen the upper body while opening up the shoulders. Begin by laying on the mat with your feet flat on the floor and knees bent. Your hands should be flat and facing the floor on each side of your body. Lift the hips and glutes up towards the sky and keep the core tightened. Exhale and inhale through the pose.

3. Runner’s Lunge

A runner’s lunge is an effective pose to perform during a yoga session and to deep stretch following a run. It helps to relieve tension in the quads, hamstrings, and glutes. Begin in plank position with the hands below the shoulders. Step your right or left foot out to the edge of your yoga mat; it should be in line with your fingers. Allow your hips and back to sink down to the mat as you hold the stretch.
