1. Listen

Instead of being reactive at the onset, take a step back and listen to your client’s wants and needs. If they’re unsure of what they want, talk to them until they figure it out. This includes acknowledging their messages, emails, and calls, even at unusual hours. Refrain from shooting down their concerns and ideas, no matter how far fetched they may be, and make a note since these may come in handy someday.

2. Set Expectations

Some clients are laser-focused on what they want that they tend to dismiss other suggestions. Speak with them early on about their budget and underscore the importance of sticking to it. Be blunt, if necessary, and remind them of viable options within the price range that are just as great but attainable.

3. Adjust & Adapt

After two or three meetings, you might be able to gauge the personality or type of client you’re dealing with. Try to adjust accordingly and figure out the best way to handle potential friction with them.  

4. Find a Solution Together

Some clients may be thrifty to a fault or such a perfectionist that it’s getting harder to please them. A good real estate agent will work with their clients to come up with an agreeable solution. Although they might become too proactive to the point that they’re overstepping boundaries, remind them that it’s your responsibility and not theirs.  

5. Be Empathetic

Of all the ways you can make homebuying as painless as possible, having empathy should be on top of your list. Place yourself in your client’s shoes to understand where they’re coming from and why they feel a certain way. Being empathetic allows you to see their situation in a better light, and from there, you can suggest solutions that might work.
