Hardware fasteners are used to hold your carpentry project together, whether you’re building a structure or crafting some fine cabinets. When you start shopping for fasteners, you’ll find that you have a lot of options. Choose based on the type of project you’re doing and what function you want your fastener to perform.

Which Fasteners Do You Need?

Nails

Nails are driven into the wood by striking them on the head with a hammer. The most common are round head nails, which are thick, strong, and used in construction. Select a nail that is at least three times longer than the depth of the thinner material you are fastening.

fastenersFinishing nails are recommended when you need a smooth, concealed finish. These nails have a smaller head that will sit flush with the wood surface. Roofing nails have a larger head designed to help hold the roofing material in place. Masonry nails are best for fastening timber to brick or stone. They are thick and made of a stronger material such as hardened zinc.

Tacks

Tacks are sharp and have a pointed end, and their design minimizes the chance of tearing through materials, making them ideal for fabrics. Brass tacks are recommended for projects where you want to prevent corrosion, such as outdoor furniture. Upholstery tacks have decorative finishes and are used to attach upholstery to furniture.

Brads

Brads are very thin nails made of wire and have a small head that is often asymmetrical. They can be driven in with a brad gun or by hand with a tack hammer. Because the head is so small and the wire so thin, these are used for delicate lightweight jobs where you don’t want to see it. There’s no need to putty the nail holes to conceal them. They are often used for small trim, delicate molding, and in cabinets.
