If you're planning a home remodeling project, your process should include making arrangements for your children. Not only could kids get in the way of a renovation, but the excitement may disrupt their usual routines and sense of normalcy. To make the process go as smoothly as possible, include these arrangements into your plan.

Do:

Introduce them to your remodeling contractors.

During the remodeling process, you'll have workers walking in and out of your home frequently. Introduce them to your children and explain why they're there, so your kids can feel more comfortable.

Ask for their input.

While planning your home remodeling, ask your kids for advice on features that will affect them. While you may not want to give them control over the large decisions, give them a say in color choices or final touches in their rooms, the bathrooms they use most often, and other areas of the house where they spend time. This will help them feel better about the change. Narrow down options to a few that you like, then let your children decide between those.

Take them to a friend’s house.

Home RemodelingIf possible, your kids should be out of the house during the home remodeling process. Leave them with a babysitter, or arrange to have them meet with family and friends. While they may not stay there for the entire project, this can be helpful when working on bedrooms and bathrooms to avoid disrupting routines.

Don't:

Leave them unsupervised.

Home remodeling involves sharp objects and dangerous tools. Your child may get injured if they're left alone around these materials. If they must be in the home, make sure they have closer adult supervision than usual.

Expect your contractors to watch them.

You aren't paying your contractors to babysit, and any time they spend wrangling your kids will mean a delay in your project and increased costs. If you can’t be home with your kids during work hours, make other arrangements for your children to avoid delays.

Disrupt their routine.

As much as possible, keep your kids on their usual schedule. They may be out of the home during the day, but that doesn't mean you can't share family meals or follow the usual bedtime routine. This will help minimize the upset caused by the changes in your home.
