If you’re thinking about hiring a general contractor to build a custom home, you know that the process is likely to be very exciting. There are many important decisions to make that will affect your lifestyle for years to come! Just as crucial, though, is to have an understanding of the process so that you know what to expect. Here’s how it works.

4 FAQ on the Custom Home Construction Process

How is construction performed?

custom homesFirst, your homebuilder must prepare the site for work. After excavating and leveling the ground, the area is ready for work to begin. Builders may dig a hole to accommodate a basement or pour the foundation to set the stage for the rest of the home. After that, general contractors get to work creating the home’s frame, which includes the flooring, roofing, and walls. Pipes, wires, vents, and sewer lines are situated for electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems. This is followed by insulation and drywall installation, and the addition of fundamental interior and exterior features, like hardwood flooring or bricks.

What about other aesthetic design details?

After the structural work is completed, general contractors address the cosmetic details. These are the elements that give your custom home a truly personalized quality, like paint colors or shutter styles. Your builder will install the countertops, fixtures, cabinets, vanities, doors, mirrors, and any other features of your choice. Landscaping and cleanup occur once everything is installed.

What do inspections involve?

During the initial building phase, the city inspector will assess the site after the foundation cures, to ensure that it is structurally sound and meets code requirements. Throughout the remainder of the building process, the home’s framework, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems are also inspected to ensure that they are up to code. These usually consist of three separate inspections. The fifth and final inspection ensures that the home is compliant with all codes and requirements.

How long does the process take?

This really depends on the size of the property. It may take a few months to obtain building permits, if you don’t already have them. The work itself can take anywhere from four months to a year, and that time frame may be affected by weather conditions.
