A leak is one of the most common problems with air conditioning units. While it may not seem to impact the current function of your system, leaving it alone can reduce efficiency, cause water damage, and lead to more serious and costly repairs down the line. Learn a few of the most common reasons that AC systems leak so you know when to call your air conditioning contractor.

A Guide to AC Leak Causes

1. Clogged Condensate Drain Line

ac installationThe condensation created by your system collects on the evaporator coil, and your drain line moves it down through the system for disposal. However, these lines often get clogged with dirt, dust, or other debris. The backup may result in a leak at the connection or rupture the line completely, leaving dripping water inside your home. In this case, your air conditioning contractor will need to replace the line.

2. Bad Drain Pan

Indoor units have drain pans to catch all of the condensate the drain line moves out of the system, where a pump then moves it outdoors for safe disposal. The pans in older units tend to rust over time from the constant moisture, which leads to holes, cracks, and a pool of water around the unit. Look under your unit to check on the condition of the drain pan.

3. Dirty Air Filter

The air filter needs to be replaced every one to three months. If it isn’t changed out for a fresh one, the clogged filter will block airflow over the evaporator coil. The coil will then get too cold and freeze. It later melts all that ice in a short period of time, which overflows the drain pan. Preventing this leak only involves checking whether your filter is dirty and replacing it if needed.
