Curious children love to explore new things around the home; and when they discover the HVAC system, they may begin to tinker. To ensure they aren’t injured and that nothing breaks, it’s important to child-proof your unit. It only takes a few changes to prevent HVAC repairs, and you can start with the ones below.

Ways to Child-Proof Your Heating & Cooling System

1. Keep the Thermostat Out of Reach

To ensure they don’t mess with it, mount it out of reach on the wall. Make sure that there isn’t any furniture nearby that they can use to reach it; and if your system has remotes, keep them somewhere secure. This will stop your child from changing the settings. When you make adjustments, explain the importance of energy conservation to them.

2. Watch the Ductwork

If your children put toys or other items into the vents of your ductwork, they may get sucked in and rattle around. Larger or sharp items may also damage the ductwork, so advise your children not to play near the vents. If you have visible ductwork in the basement, attic, or another area, explain that they need to avoid it as well.

3. Block Units

Your children may also want to investigate your outdoor unit or furnace. These systems have a lot of moving parts, and you don’t want anything to happen that will require HVAC repairs. Children may accidentally damage connecting hoses, wiring, or piping. They may also stick items into the unit that can damage parts. Sticking fingers into the ventilation slits or touching the hot surface of a furnace can hurt them, too, so consider fencing in your outdoor unit or adding a cover. You can do the same with your furnace.
