Regular trips to the veterinarian are important for your cat, and if they have a history of hating their carrier, you know getting them inside can seem impossible. You never want to stress your cat out or force them out of their comfort zone, which is why you need to approach the situation carefully. Never force them in; instead, try using the tips below to ensure they’re comfortable.

How to Get Your Cat Safely In Their Carrier

1. Let Them Get Acquainted

veterinarian-rolling-hills-veterinary-hospitalBefore you do anything, your cat needs to know that the carrier is a safe place. In the weeks before their veterinarian visit, purchase a comfortable carrier and place it in an area where they spend a lot of time. Place a soft, cozy blanket inside, and leave the door open. Gradually, they’ll begin exploring their carrier on their own. Once they feel safe, close the door if they’re relaxing inside, though don’t lock it. This will get them more familiar with the environment.

2. Start From the Top

If you need to place your cat in a carrier they aren’t familiar with, flip it so the door is facing the ceiling. Tuck a towel at the bottom, lift them, and then slowly lower them into the carrier. This is a much less aggressive process, and they won’t feel trapped in the same way as being forced into the carrier when it’s in its normal position.

3. Use Their Favorite Treats

You may also have to lure your cat into the carrier when you go to the veterinarian. Another safe way to do this is with their favorite treats. Once they come near the carrier on their own, toss a few of these into it. Once they go in and begin snacking, slowly and quietly close the door. They’ll be more occupied with eating and gradually relax. To keep them comfortable, sprinkle more treats in.
