Classic cars evoke images of great engineering, sleek designs, and pinstripes. These thin lines of paint have become a staple of classic cars, motorcycles, or just about any vehicle you can think of. Go to any car show, and you'll see beautiful vehicles sporting pinstripes. Here’s what you need to know about pinstriping and how it’s used.

What Is the Story Behind Pinstriping?

Long before Von Dutch became a household name, early man had been drawing lines to tell their stories. During their heyday, carriages had accent lines painted along the panels. However, auto customization became popular in the 1950s, and more people started adding pinstripes to their cars to make them stand out. It was also during this time that Ken Howard, also known as Von Dutch, added flourishes freehand and elevated pinstriping into an art form that's now a staple at every car show. Howard eventually taught his style to “Shakey” Jake and Dean Jeffries. These two men put their own stamp on it and passed their knowledge on to other stripers.

How Are Pinstripes Used?

car showPinstripes can add a pop of color to a basic design and also be used to emphasize a body line. Today's cars usually have accents that are oddly shaped or positioned. Pinstriping can add emphasis to these features or be used to distract people from noticing a feature the owner is not happy about.

These lines can also visually enlarge or elongate your car based on the placement of the design. It's also great for covering up paint defects or areas where the surface has been dented or scuffed. Lastly, drivers who join a car show use pinstripes to express their individuality or make a statement.
