Whether you’re rushing to make breakfast or trying to fix Thanksgiving dinner, one of the biggest sources of frustration in the kitchen is a lack of space. But you don’t have to move into a mansion to get some elbow room—just adjust your current cabinet design. To ensure you get the maximum amount of space after your remodel, use the following tips for enhancing kitchen cabinet storage.

3 Ways to Maximize Kitchen Cabinet Storage

1. Make Cabinet Modifications

If you’re happy with your current kitchen cabinetry configuration, talk to your contractor about making changes within them. Modify existing cabinets by adding extra shelves to allow for more rows of plates and cups. For example, instead of stacking 21 plates on top of each other, you could make three piles of seven for easier access and fewer broken dishes. You can also add rods for hanging dish towels, tongs, and other kitchen essentials out of sight.

 2. Add an Island

Choose sliding drawers for utensils or wastebaskets and hinged doors for pots and pans. You can even carve out a little nook for your pet to curl up while you’re running around the kitchen.

3. Install an Upper Row of Cabinets

Look up at your cabinets now—do they stretch all the way to the ceiling? Chances are there are a few feet of unused space above them where you may have placed decorations. If you’re running out of space in your cooking area, have your remodeling contractor install an additional row of cabinets in this gap to drastically expand your storage real estate.
