A large part of driving safely is being defensive of other’s actions and unexpected situations that could arise while on the road. Developing these habits will help you avoid an auto collision, expensive repairs, and bodily harm. Here are a few tips to help you drive more defensively when you hit the road.

How to Drive Defensively & Prevent Auto Collisions

1. Check the Weather

Before leaving your home, check the weather so you have an idea of what to expect on the road. When it’s raining out, give yourself plenty of time to arrive at your destination. This will prevent the need for driving too fast under unsavory conditions.

2. Pay Attention to Your Surroundings

Knowing what’s going on around you will help you anticipate the actions of other drivers. It will also allow you to create a quick solution in the event a distracted driver puts you at risk of an auto collision.

3. Follow Cars Cautiously

Anytime you’re driving behind other vehicles, leave a three-second following distance between your car and theirs. This will give you plenty of time to stop in emergencies and will provide more time for those behind you to slow down. If someone happens to move into the gap you’ve left open, change lanes when possible or slow down to open up a new space.

4. Stay Focused

While driving, put away all distractions. Leave your phone in your purse or store it in the center console. If riding with kids, provide them with coloring books or other activities that will keep them quietly entertained so they aren’t pulling your attention away from the road.

5. Use Your Blinkers

Whenever you’re changing lanes or making a turn, use your blinkers to notify other drivers of what you’re about to do. Do this even when you’re the only one on the road so the action becomes a habit.
