Great for privacy, security, and style, wood fencing is a valuable addition to any property. It’s a classic choice that complements a variety of architectural styles, from craftsman to contemporary. Although the wood species and design can affect the specifics of a maintenance plan, there are a few essential tips to keep it in good condition. Whether you already have a wooden fence or are considering installing one, here’s what you need to know.

How to Maintain Wood Fencing

1. Start Strong

If you’re planning on installing a new fence, invest in cedar or redwood from the get-go. Although the price points on these materials are a bit higher, they’re more pest- and water-resistant than other types, which means they’ll last longer. Also, consider using pressure-treated wood for the posts; these are chemically treated for maximum protection.

2. Seal It

If your fence is in a sunny location, make sure your sealant has ultraviolet inhibitors. Sealant should be applied every two to three years, at least. To see if it’s time for more, check the surface of your fence the next time it rains. If the water beads up, there’s no immediate need for sealant; however, if it gets absorbed, it’s time for a new coat.

3. Minimize Water Damage

Excess moisture eventually leads to wood rot. If applicable and whenever possible, adjust your sprinklers so they don’t hit your fence directly. In addition, avoid planting bushes or vines near or on the fence, as this vegetation can lock in moisture on the wooden posts. Similarly, if you want to plant flowers near the fence, use a raised bed to prevent water damage.
