Bathroom remodeling is an excellent way to improve comfort and boost home value. If you have a loved one who uses a wheelchair, it’s important to keep their needs in mind when designing. There are a number of desirable, handicap-friendly features you can integrate that look stunning and make bathing and hygiene easy. Before you begin, consider the following for your remodeling project.

How to Design a Wheelchair-Accessible Bathroom

1. Curbless Shower

Getting into a bathtub alone can be difficult for someone in a wheelchair. Instead, upgrade to a curbless shower. They can easily open the door and wheel in without the worry of climbing over obstacles or risking a slip and fall. Couple it with interior handrails and install bathing fixtures at wheelchair height so they can easily use them. Install soap, shampoo, and conditioner dispensers so that no one will have to lean over to pick up bottles.

2. Hanging Sinks

bathroom remodelingVanities can be difficult to use if you’re in a wheelchair. To ensure easy access to the sink, install hanging units or vanities that have a carved out entry that the wheelchair can fit under. Install them at a lower height and use handle faucets that are easier to move. Add a grab rail to the side along with a storage area for personal products.

3. Wall-Hung Toilet

To make it easy for your loved one to use the toilet on their own, install a hanging fixture that has anchored grab rails at the side. Because it’s hanging, they’ll be able to wheel closer and more easily hoist themselves onto the toilet. The bars should be no more than 36 inches apart, and the toilet must be 17 to 19 inches high according to ADA® guidelines.
