If you forget to put down tarps when remodeling or your little ones use floors as easels, splashes of different paint colors could end up on home carpets. The pigment dries quickly, which is why you should take steps to remove the mess as soon as possible. To prevent irreversible damage to the fibers, follow the below instructions to restore your carpets.

3 Ways to Get Rid of Splatters on Carpeting

1. Blot With a Wet Paper Towel

If water- or latex-based paint colors get on your carpet or rug, you might be able to easily remove the stain if it’s still wet. Take a damp paper towel, wet it with tap water, and dab it directly on the stain until the residue is gone. Never scrub to expedite the process. Doing so will spread the tinge and make the discolored area larger.

2. Use Hot Water, Detergent & a Pin

paint colorsIf the water- or latex-based stain has already set, you’ll need more than a damp paper towel to remove it. To get rid of dry colorant, pour hot water and detergent on the blemish and let it soak in. This will allow the paint to soften. After a few minutes, you should be able to scrape the tint off carpet fibers with a small, dull knife or needle.

3. Try Steam Cleaning the Stain

If the above methods don’t work or you’re trying to remove oil-based paint colors, consider steam cleaning the carpet. The steam will help soften the smudge. You should pick at the patch with a pin or blunt-edged knife while it’s being cleaned to prevent it from drying again while you work.
