1. Low Tire Pressure

As air pressure drops in winter, so does tire PSI. Tire pressure drops one to two pounds for every 10-degree decrease in temperature, resulting in tires that make too much contact with the road and wear out faster. Purchase an inexpensive pressure gauge tool to check your tires every three to four weeks during winter. Refer to your owner’s manual to avoid over-inflating your tires and decreasing traction on slick roads.

2. Cold Engine

Starting problems during winter can indicate a cold engine. Older vehicles are even more susceptible to this issue because their engines do not include insulated switch plates. Keep your engine warm when it is not in use with an electric blanket, and always try to park it in a garage or carport. Do not “warm up” your engine, as this retro auto maintenance tactic can actually cause more damage. 

3. Frozen Doors & Locks

If your doors have frozen shut, do not try to force them open as this could damage their seals. Use a hair dryer to melt the ice and prevent re-freezing issues with cooking spray applications. Deal with a frozen lock by heating your key with a lighter. Cover the key with WD-40 to avoid further problems, as the lubricating agent keeps the lock from freezing.

4. Dead Battery

Frigid temperatures drain battery power and contribute to freeze/thaw issues. Keep your vehicle in a heated garage to prevent dead battery problems and place jumper cables in your trunk for emergencies. If your battery is over five years old, replace it.

5. Icy Windshield

While snow takes little time to remove from your car’s windshield, ice is another matter. Do not pour hot water on a frozen windshield. This could create cracks and necessitate a premature replacement. Make your own de-icing solutions with white vinegar and park your vehicle indoors as much as possible.
