Seeing someone fall unconscious is a scary experience. However, for their sake, it’s important to act quickly. There can be several reasons for their collapse, ranging from blood loss and blunt trauma to low blood sugar and hyperventilation. In some cases, a trip to the emergency room may be necessary, so take the following steps to ensure the person gets the care they need.

What to Do When Someone Falls Unconscious

1. Check Their Vitals

emergency roomFirst, ensure that the person isn’t suffering an immediate life-threatening issue. Place your finger beneath their nostril or put a hand on their chest to determine airflow. You can then check their pulse by finding the vein on their wrist or by holding your hand over their heart. If they aren’t breathing or have a slow heart rate, call an ambulance to take them to an emergency room immediately. If you or someone is able, perform CPR until the paramedics arrive.

2. Raise Their Legs

If they’re breathing, raise their legs to promote blood circulation. Loosen belts and other tight clothes that may be restricting it. If they’ve hit their head and are bleeding, press on the wound while trying to improve circulation. They’ll need emergency room services for the bleeding or if they don’t regain consciousness after one minute.

3. Take Them to a Primary Care Clinic

If they have no issues or injuries and regain consciousness quickly, they still need medical care. They may be confused at first, so speak slowly and keep them from getting up and moving around too much. Then arrange for them to be taken to a primary care clinic for an exam. If possible, go with them so that you can share what happened with the doctor.
