The day your child gets their braces removed is an exciting time, but to ensure they maintain their new smile, they’ll need to wear a dental retainer. From the several orthodontic options, choose one that will suit their lifestyle best so they’ll wear it consistently.

3 Retainers Options for Your Child

1. Permanent

If you want a low-maintenance option for your child, opt for a fixed lingual retainer. The dentist will bond it to the rear of your child’s teeth, so it won’t be visible when they smile. Plus, your child won’t have to worry about cleaning it since they can’t take it out. However, plaque can build up easily, which is why daily brushing and flossing is essential. They’ll also need to avoid hard foods that may damage the retainer.

2. Vacuum Form Retainers

It will need to be cleaned regularly and stored in an orthodontic container to preserve its condition. However, this retainer is not the most durable, so if your child grinds their teeth, you may want to consider a different option.

3. Hawley Retainers

This is one of the most popular and recognizable retainers. The dentist makes a mold of the roof of your child’s mouth, then attaches wiring that will fit over your child’s teeth. Hawley retainers are the most easily adjusted option. Since they’re removable, they do require daily cleaning. Some kids might find it difficult to swallow with these in, so have the dentist adjust the fit if needed.
