Spring Break – Traveling With Pain

Top 5 Things For Flying With Chronic Pain

  1. What time of day should you fly?

When to schedule your flight? That is an important question to ask yourself, then ask yourself when is your pain typically the worst? For example, if your pain is the worst during the morning, it would be best not to schedule your flight at 8am. It is also important to look into non-stop flights- you may pay a little more, but the cost may be worth it.

  1. How full is your bag?

Nobody likes to drag an overstuffed suitcase or bag through the airport. It is important to first look at the type of luggage you are using. Does your suitcase or duffel bag have rollers, a sturdy hand that extends, supportive straps? Using a checklist while packing can be helpful, and ensure that you don’t over pack. While many of us do over pack, remember that many hotels and resorts off laundering services, so you might want to save on your back and spend a little on laundry services!

  1. It may not be chilly where you are traveling to, but…
don’t forget to bring a lightweight coat or sweatshirt! A lightweight coat or sweatshirt is the perfect size to roll up and tuck behind your neck or low back for added support. If you don’t bring something, you can ask the flight attendant for a pillow or blanket.
  1. Stretching
When the seat belt light isn’t lit, take advantage and move! A few laps up and down the aisles will help stretch your legs. When are you waiting in the line at that bathroom, do some stretching- reaching for your toes, rolling your shoulders, tilting your head from side to side, and reaching tall are all very simple stretches you can do while standing in line. Stretching before and after your flight can be helpful as well!
  1. Importance of staying hydrated
Stay hydrated and bring a snack! With all the excitement of going on vacation you might forget to grab water and a snack before leaving for the airport, but lucky for you airports are filled with stores! Dehydration can cause several unpleasant things like cramps, sleepiness, headaches and dizziness, so it is important to have a bottle of water and most importantly, to drink it!
